How to Use Mockups in Photoshop

Whether you're working with downloadable PSD files or prefer the speed of online generators, these guides will help you create professional mockups in no time.

Using PSD Mockups (with Photoshop)

PSD mockups offer maximum flexibility and control. They typically use Smart Objects in Adobe Photoshop for easy design integration. Here is the detailed process:

1

Download & Unzip

First, download the PSD mockup file. If it comes in a .zip archive, you'll need to extract (unzip) its contents to a folder on your computer before you can use it.

2

Open in Photoshop

Launch Adobe Photoshop (or a compatible editor like Photopea.com) and open the extracted .psd file (File > Open).

3

Locate the Smart Object Layer

In the Layers panel (usually on the right, or toggle via Window > Layers), look for a layer specifically designated for your design. Common names include:

  • "Your Design Here"
  • "Place Artwork"
  • "Double Click to Edit"
  • "Smart Object" (often marked with a small icon on the thumbnail)
4

Edit the Smart Object

Double-click directly on the Smart Object layer's thumbnail (the small preview image, not the layer name). This action will open the Smart Object's contents in a new document tab, typically a .psb file.

5

Place Your Design

Inside this new .psb document, hide or delete any placeholder layers. Then, place your own design:

  • Go to File > Place Embedded... and select your design file (JPG, PNG, AI, etc.).
  • Resize and position your design to fit the canvas perfectly.
  • Press Enter to confirm placement.

IMPORTANT: You must Save this file (File > Save) for the changes to appear!

6

View Updated Mockup

Switch back to your original main mockup .psd file tab. You should now see your design automatically updated and seamlessly integrated into the mockup scene with all effects applied!

7

Customize & Export

Many mockups offer additional customization layers for background colors, shadows, and highlights. Explore these to fine-tune the look. Finally, go to File > Export > Export As... to save your final image as a JPG or PNG.

Using Online Mockup Generators

Online mockup generators are perfect for quick results directly in your web browser, no software installation required. Here's exactly how to use them:

1

Choose Your Mockup

Browse our extensive collection of online mockup templates. You can start with our popular Black Girl T-Shirt Mockup or explore the full Online Mockup Generator library.

2

Upload Your Design

On the mockup generator page, look for an "Upload Image," "Add Your Design," or a similar button. Most tools also support simply dragging and dropping your design file (JPG or PNG) directly onto the designated area.

3

Adjust & Position

Once uploaded, use the on-screen controls to resize, rotate, and move your design. Ensure it fits perfectly on the product (e.g., the t-shirt chest area or the phone screen).

4

Customize Mockup Options

Many online generators allow further customization. You might be able to change the product color (e.g., change a white t-shirt to black), select a different background, or adjust shadows.

5

Download Your Mockup

When you're happy with the preview, find the "Download" or "Export" button. Your completed mockup image will be saved to your device as a high-quality JPG or PNG file, ready to use!
